1. After class, copy any main ideas/information/formulas from your notes onto a separate sheet or note cards to make them easier to find when you do homework. This will also come in handy when you study for the test.
2. Do homework as soon as you can after a topic has been covered in class.
3. Math is learned by doing problems. Doing the problems helps you learn the formulas and techniques you need to know.
4. You might begin by trying the example problems in the text. Cover up the solution and work a problem yourself. If you get stuck, you can peek at the solution and explanation in the text to help you finish solving it.
5. When doing practice problems, first try to solve a problem on your own. If you get stuck, then use the MyMathLab (MML) help aids or look for a similar example in your notes or the text.
6. When you aren't sure how to complete a problem, print it out or write it down and mark it and ask for help from a friend, classmate, tutor, or your instructor. Don't erase any work you've done so they can help you find your mistake.
7. Make sure you can do ALL the various types of problems in each section. Rework similar exercises until you are able to do each kind of problem without looking at your notes or using the MML help aids.
8. To be successful in mathematics, you must maintain old skills while adding new ones so it’s a good idea to work a few problems from previous assignments every time you have a new assignment.
9. Don't be afraid to ask questions in class-there are usually other students wanting to know answers to the same questions.
10. Get help as soon as you need it. Don't wait until a test is near. The new material builds on the previous sections, so anything you don't understand now will make future material difficult to understand.
