REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS
Algebra: A Combined Approach (3rd ed.) by Elayn Martin-Gay, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007.
MyMathLab Student Access Code *
Non-graphing scientific calculator—TI-30X II is suggested
A 3-ring binder is recommended for keeping and organizing handouts, notes, and other classwork
|
Ways to make MyMathLab affordable:
1. Buy the access code bundled with a new book.
2. Buy a used book online (Amazon.com or Half.com) AND buy MML access from www.coursecompass.com or purchase an access code kit separately from the RVC bookstore.
*You do not need to buy a new MML access code when you take another class that uses the exact same textbook. |
COURSE DESCRIPTION PCS Code 1.4
Intermediate Algebra Part I includes a review of topics from beginning algebra with additional work in linear equations and inequalities and systems of equations. The course will also cover absolute value equations and inequalities as well as rational expressions and equations. Placement into MTH 093 is according to placement test scores or on a voluntary basis. Credit earned does not count toward any degree, nor does it transfer.
Prerequisite: MTH 091 and MTH 092, or equivalent, with grades of C or higher in both or appropriate placement score. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT MEET THE PREREQUISITE CAN BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS AT ANY TIME.
This course addresses the following student learning outcomes. The student will be able to:
Integrate technology into all fields of knowledge and expression.
Demonstrate competency in critical thinking.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This is a complete list of topics covered on the final exam.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Solve linear equations in one variable. 13. Solve applications with rational equations.
2. Solve linear inequalities in one variable. 14. Simplify complex fractions.
3. Use interval notation. 15. Graph linear equations and identify slopes and
4. Solve compound inequalities in one variable. intercepts.
5. Solve absolute value equations and inequalities. 16. Use slope-intercept form to write equations of lines.
6. Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. 17. Use slope-intercept form to graph lines.
7. Factor polynomials, including binomials 18. Write equations of lines.
and trinomials. 19. Solve systems of linear equations in 2 and 3 variables.
8. Solve quadratic equations by factoring. 20. Solve applications using systems of equations.
9. Simplify rational expressions. 21. Solve and graph systems of linear inequalities.
10. Multiply and divide rational expressions. 22. Identify and solve applications involving direct,
11. Add and subtract rational expressions. inverse and/or joint variation.
12. Solve rational equations.
COURSE POLICIES
Withdrawals: A final grade of W will NOT automatically be given to a student who stops attending class. Avoid an unnecessary failing grade by going to the Records office and officially withdrawing.
Repeat Policy: If a student receives two non-passing grades (Ds or Fs) in this course, that student is not allowed to re-enroll for another math class at Rock Valley College without permission of the Associate Dean of Sciences.

|
| If you don’t think you’ll pass this module, withdraw from this module and the one you planned to take in the next 8 weeks. Sign up for this module again for the next 8 weeks. Online Services will list sections and number of seats available. To register, go to the Records Office. |

Class Behavior:
1. Arrive on time for class and do not leave early.
2. Please be respectful of others in the class, including the instructor. Chatting with classmates during class is not appropriate.
3. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off, or set on vibrate, and remain out of sight during class. Cell phone calculators may NOT be used on tests.
If students choose to engage in behavior that is contrary to these policies or other behavior which disrupts the class, they will be asked to leave. If this occurs repeatedly, they will be removed from the course.
College Policy on Academic Honesty Standards and Procedures:
The faculty and administration expect that RVC students are enrolled in courses as serious and honorable scholars. Furthermore, students are expected to do their own, original work, except when collaboration on projects is directed by faculty as part of the course or specific assignment. Students are expected to observe the commonly accepted standards of academic honesty at all times. Students who commit any of the forms of academic dishonesty as outlined in the RVC Student Handbook are subject to the penalties and sanctions agreed upon by the Faculty and Administration of Rock Valley College.
Notification of Services for Students with Disabilities:
If you are a student who feels that you may need academic accommodation(s) based on the impact of a disability, please contact the Coordinator of Disability Support Services privately to discuss your specific needs. The Coordinator of Disability Support Services (located on the 2nd floor of the student center) can be reached at 815-921-2356. It is important to contact the Disability Services office as early in the semester as possible to ensure that reasonable accommodations can be provided in a timely manner. Please initiate a discussion with your instructor about implementing any accommodations.
GRADING CRITERIA
Attendance………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………25 points
Two absences will be excused. Five points will be deducted from your attendance points for each day
missed beyond the 2 excused absences. You will lose points if you are not present and participating
in class activities the entire class period.
Top 25 MyMathLab Assignments (3 points each)……………………….………………………………..…………………..75 points
Check MML regularly for due dates and times. Late work will NOT be scored.
3 Unit Tests (100 points each)….………………………………………………….………………………………………………...300 points
Books and notes are NOT allowed on tests.
Make-up Test Policy: Make-up tests will only be given in the case of verifiable illness or emergency
in which the instructor was NOTIFIED ON THE TEST DATE. If you are sick or have an emergency on a test
day, contact the instructor by phone or e-mail that day, letting her know why you are missing the test
and when is the earliest time you could take the test. Each student is allowed only ONE make-up test,
and it must be taken within a week of the regularly scheduled test. If a make-up test is taken before the
next class session, there will be no penalty. Otherwise, 5% will be deducted from your score on the test.
Comprehensive Final Exam……………….…………………………………………………………………………..………………100 points
This class will take the departmental multiple-choice final exam on the last day of class.
There will be no partial credit. When studying for the final, use the course objectives as a checklist.
Honesty is expected, and any incident of cheating will result in a zero on the test or assignment.
